Jizo Matcha Party is a series of paintings by Michael Hoffman of six Mizo/monks/bodhisattvas enjoying on another’s company over bowls of matcha.
Michael first painted the broadest strokes in an outline of the jizo and tea in sumi; we then printed those strokes on beautiful German bamboo paper, which was then subsequently painted on again by Michael.

About the Artist
Michael Hofmann lived in Japan for nearly 40 years, studying and practicing classic Japanese brush painting with Jikihara Gyokusei, abbot of Kokusei-ji widely considered one of Japan’s greatest manga painters. Michael’s extensive body of sumi-e work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout Japan and the world. He’s also taught sumi-e at universities, museums, and cultural institutions, and has illustrated numerous books.
