buoyant, creamy, lush $83.00
A feisty, gorgeous matcha that's ready to slap you with its attitude. Racy. Fantastic color, heady aromas, intense "matcha" taste (think strong green tea ice cream), faint twinges of bitterness and astringency (which gives it its sass). Plenty of umami and natural sweetness means it pairs beautifully with savory food. Why do people like our matcha so much? The 94 is our recommended intro into hyperpremium. It's a beautiful epicurean experience and phenomenal value that soars above similarly priced matcha. Has verve and power, like a zen wake-up stick. From Tawara, Uji, Kyoto Prefecture.

Blend Rikyu Matcha
dreamy, electric, spellbinding $205.00
This tea, whipped up thick, seems to send memory into overdrive; into a contemplative state. We think Sen No Rikyu, the most masterful and original matcha connoisseur in Japan's very long history of tea, would have marveled at its rich, umami-laden flavor, brilliant color, and ridiculously long finish. This is dreamy tea that tastes beautiful in any concentration, thick or thin, and sates like nothing else. From Ujitawara, Kyoto. Why do people like our matcha so much? And we can't help but love Rikyu even more after a comment from one of California's most distinguished tea teachers, Douglas Huskins, who said: "If Rikyu were alive today, I suspect his modernist approach to tea would look a lot like Breakaway Matcha's."

Houjicha Original Houjicha Original
Houjicha Original
smoky, nutty, naturally sweet $46.00
This houjicha is 100% green tea. But instead of using the leaves, as we do for matcha, it's the stems of the plant that are used. The stems get roasted in big clay pots over a charcoal fire until they turn brown and very aromatic. They then get milled and turned into fine powder. You use a scant gram of this powder to make a cup tea, using the same matcha frother you're already using. The taste is just delightful -- toasty and roasted flavors meld with classic green tea flavors. It's mellow and nutty and almost sweet, with caramel notes. We especially enjoy it after dinner / before bed.  There are four great things about this houjicha: It's decaf! Well, as close to caffeine-free as decaf coffee is; not 100%, but close. You can drink it anytime and not worry about the caffeine. We get the satisfaction of using the entire plant, not just the leaves for matcha. It feels good to consume these stems. So much better than using them just for compost! Zero waste. Excellent for coffee lovers. The smoky, nutty, roasted flavor profile and aromas are usually a hit with coffee lovers. Very affordable -- roughly 32 cents per serving (or just 26 cents with a subscription).
Matcha Sieve Matcha Sieve
Matcha Sieve
Create a perfectly smooth matcha brew $12.00
This elegant small sieve creates a perfectly smooth matcha brew. It's necessary to sieve matcha to prevent clumping; our tea is so finely ground that static electricity in the air creates clumping, and sieving dissipates the static to give you a creamy, flawless cup of matcha. This sieve performs better when you don't wash it -- simply brush it clean with a toothbrush or other small brush.  If you must wash: Hand wash only and thoroughly dry. Do not soak. Not dishwasher safe. Dimensions: 6.25" x 3"
