This spectacular matcha is our staff favorite. We like it thin, but we especially like it thick. Froths to a stunning texture that's light and full bodied at the same time. Notes of raw cacao nibs. Inhaling its aromas is like passing out in a tea garden. The delights continue long after it's swallowed.

Why do people like our matcha so much?

Origin: Ujitawara, Kyoto. From our very favorite fastidious growers.

Name origin: From the historic and beautiful city in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan's ancient capital and home of Japanese zen buddhism.

Tried this one because of the "staff favorite" words in the description. Enjoying, very much.

It's me again. I know I just did a review about 8 months ago, but I just have to say: I have been an avid Breakaway Matcha drinker since 2010. Blend Kamakura is smooth sailing meets umami deliciousness. It starts off every single one of my mornings, and this is not an exaggeration. I love it.

My name is Cynthia and I am a recent convert to matcha from a 30-year dedicated coffee-drinker. In January 2023, I was hospitalized for severe stomach pain. Several weeks and tests later, it is determined that I have gastritis from excessive acid due to my gastric sleeve procedure 5 years ago.

Why am I telling you this you may wonder? Since I have found Breakaway matcha, I have not had a reoccurrence of the horrible stomach pain! I have not had coffee since January. I wanted you to know my story because your matcha, especially Blend 98 and Blend Kamakura, have helped my belly so much! I am also a Type 1 Diabetic and have celiac disease, so it is tough to find things that don't affect my blood sugar (caffeine even from black coffee causes a spike in blood sugar), are gluten free, and don't aggravate my gastritis.

Your matcha has literally helped me heal!

Yours truly, a reformed coffee addict in possession of a newly happy belly. Cheers! 🍵

I discovered Kamakura when it was first introduced and what an amazing find. It is rich and full bodied but at the same time so very smooth and the umami lingers on and on. I enjoy a cup everyday.

I love this blend. I never know the correct description for matcha but this one checks all the boxes.

This is the smoothest, freshest tasting matcha I've had outside of Japan. I absolutely love the silky texture, and it sharpens my cognition and focus like nothing I've ever experienced. I'm hooked. I still love the taste of coffee, but I actually can't go back to coffee now that I've experienced the focus and creativity this matcha provides me. Somewhat sadly for my pocketbook, it's worth every penny!

First time trying this blend, thought it was a little too sweet at first but the longer I had it the more I started to enjoy. Took a bit to figure out the matcha/water ratio, less is more was the lesson learned from this one!

The newest member of my beloved Breakaway Matcha lineup, Blend Kamakura is smooth and so, so vibrant.

These Breakaway matcha blends have redefined how I think about and enjoy matcha. By far the most delicious taste experience I’ve had with matcha, and the 2 I have tried so far are distinctively different.

Kamakura is just one of the many excellent selections from Breakaway that I can’t get enough of. The purity and brightness of Kamakura is yet another luminous example of the quality you can expect from this extraordinary matcha purveyor.who has taken my tea breaks to a whole new level.

While this matcha, like every other Breakaway matcha, possesses no bitterness/astringency, it doesn't quite hit the mark. It has the strongest fragrance I've ever encountered, a deep, almost cacao-like scent you can't escape. After various temperature variations and concentrations, it became apparent that the nuances of this matcha are totally lost and drowned out as an usucha (and if you're mixing this in a latte, why?). Those complexities start to emerge with a lower water ratio. This is a koicha matcha through and through, which is unfortunate. As an usucha it's unremarkable as there aren't a lot of distinguishable/unique notes that are able shine through. It's unfortunate for this price point.

I been drinking matcha along time, but not from Breakaway Matcha, until I came upon the website “Breakaway Matcha.com“ accidentally. I could not believe my eyes on the intensity the deep color green so beautiful.
I tell my family and friends how much I love drinking matcha, all about matcha benefits, all the blends of matcha and Kamakura and Blend 94 are my favorites. I order from the one and only “BreakawayMatcha.Com”.
I love this tea 🥰
Thank you guy,

I started my matcha journey drinking the Coldbrew, which I still really enjoy. I have since tried a number of the Hyperpremium teas, but Kamakura is definitely my favorite. I was initially drawn to it by the description on the website. I was looking for something smooth. Now I have it on auto-refill. Oh, and I find it works well as a coldbrew.

this is currently my favorite matcha from breakaway. smooth, rich, with a note of chocolate. yum! i was planning on drinking it on occasion but has become my everyday go-to. i truly appreciate the sales because the kamakura is a bit expensive for me. note that i’ve liked all the matchas (the flights are a great way to taste around) and love breakaway’s messaging. while kamakura blend is at the top of my future order wishlist, i’ll be pleased with any of the other matchas they offer.

I have made several purchases from Breakaway as I progressed on my matcha journey. This one is the most expensive one I have bought ton date. It tastes full flavored and smooth. It had a longer lingering taste in my mouth. The smell is quite pleasant I would describe as vegetal. I'm conflicted. What I liked, the smell, the flavor, the smoothness. What I'm not sure I liked, the flavor. I think this would be desirable at certain times, but not my every day matcha. I think I prefer a less vegetal taste.

My new favorite matcha

By far the BEST matcha I ever tasted. It's full of luminous emerald umami, and it's smooth with no bitter at all. My friends will spend money on a bottle of wine that lasts only one night, but this lasts a long long time and it's worth every penny and then some. There's nothing like it and it's truly like drinking Springtime. 5 green stars and a perfect 10

Your Questions Answered

Mainly because the farmers and processors care so much; their processes take longer, require more steps, and are just harder. They’re pretty obsessed with producing Japan’s tastiest and healthiest matcha, and we don’t mind paying them well for the extraordinary product they produce. Rarity comes into it as well -- some blends, especially the named blends (Kamakura, Rikyu, Jizo, Hikari, Satoshi, and Daphne) have extremely limited production. These teas are hard to produce.

No. No sugar, additives, or any other nonsense. It’s 100% extraordinary green tea leaves, ground up into a fine powder.

Location on the tea plant, mainly. Hyperpremium is the baby leaves; we only use the newest growth. Imagine baby vegetables, baby herbs, microgreens. They haven’t had much time to develop much molecular complexity, so there are no bitter or astringent notes, just clean, chlorophyll-packed umami.

Leaves used for coldbrew are slightly older, and have a little more biocomplexity to them. That complexity does add some bitterness and astringency, but it’s undetectable when prepared with ice water, so it tastes rich and creamy. Yields are tiny for the hyperpremium, and yields are bigger with coldbrew (the leaves themselves weigh more, and are larger, hence bigger yields).

This term has lost most of its meaning. Because there is no governing body of any type that monitors/controls what can be labeled ceremonial, anyone can -- and does -- use this moniker to connote quality, even though much of the “ceremonial” matcha on the marketplace is in fact barely culinary -- much of it could be better described as “industrial.”

Moreover, many tea ceremonies in Japan notoriously serve sub-par matcha. In the end, many of the ceremonies aren’t really about tea at all, they’re about choreography and pedigree. Sometimes the teas are tasty, but more often they’re oxidized and bitter and astringent; hallmarks of culinary (or worse) matcha.

Some people insist on organic (generally for good reasons), so we searched hard for years and finally found what we feel is the tastiest and best organic matcha in the domestic Japanese market. However, our conventionally grown matcha is utterly safe, and it tends to taste better because its umami/amino acid structure is more pronounced.
