Blank Slate

Blank Slate

We only get to do this once every ten years: happy new year, and happy new decade! A blank slate, is what it is, and I for one couldn’t be happier about it. A chance to reset, to begin again, and to decide what’s important and what’s worth working for.

Everyone seems to have negative views of resolutions these days, and their (admitted) ephemerality but, in fact, they are promises we make to our better selves, in higher states. And if we spend even a little time with our better selves, surely we’re better off, even if executions of our intentions are imperfect.

We’ve got a blank slate here, very temporarily. Here are a few things I’ll be working on:

  • remembering — on a daily basis, if possible — how brief this all is.
  • worrying a little less.
  • continuing to hone my powers of attention, and pointing them toward useful places.
  • figuring out what The Most Important Thing is for each day, and not doing anything else till I’ve completed it or made a large dent in it (the compounding powers of this practice appear to be massive; I’ll let you know!).
  • appreciating beauty in the smallest of places (large places too).

We can, of course, begin again at any point. But why not make the most of this brief window of the new decade, and habituate what’s important to you? It’s exciting — heady and exhilarating.

Would love to hear yours if you have any.

So glad you’re on this journey with me.

And here’s to 10x-ing appreciation and gratitude. It’s the holy grail, so I’ll say it again: let’s 10x appreciation and gratitude. Not a bad mantra!
